Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
Kollmorgen - Autonomous Mobile Solutions (AMS) develops world-leading navigation technologies that enable autonomous vehicles to move safely and efficiently in industrial environment. To stay at the forefront of innovation, we believe in the power of early career talent.
By engaging with students through summer internships, thesis projects, and part time roles, we create opportunities for fresh perspectives, bold ideas, and mutual growth. These collaborations not only help students gain hands-on experience in a real-world tech environment, they also bring energy, curiosity, and innovation into our teams.
Many of our employees began their journey with us as students, and their stories reflect the value of investing in future talent. One of the many success stories that began this way is Linus Wallman's journey, from curious student at Chalmers University to full-time Software Engineer on development team.
A Spark of Curiosity
Linus first discovered Kollmorgen AMS in 2023 while browsing job postings. A summer position to develop a Web GUI for automated guided vehicles (AGVs) caught his eye.
"These robots look amazing," he thought. "And it would be even cooler to program them!"
Though he didn't join us for that summer, the spark stayed with him. When a new summer position that matched his interest opened the following year, he applied and became one of the summer interns.
Summer Job Experience
"What could have felt daunting instead became an incredible opportunity, thanks to the team's warm and supportive welcome."
From the start, Linus was given a meaningful and stimulating technical task. It was a challenge that allowed him to apply his academic knowledge in a real-world setting, while being supported by a team that encouraged learning and collaboration.
After the summer, Linus continued working part-time while completing his studies. With one day a week dedicated to wrapping up ongoing tasks, he remained an active contributor. "The flexibility Kollmorgen AMS provided allowed me to balance work and studies seamlessly," he shares. "Their support during this period was invaluable."
From Thesis to Real-World Innovation
"During my summer work, I was already thinking about my master's thesis. I quickly realized that Kollmorgen AMS is an innovative leader in the industry, which sparked discussions about potential research topics." Linus recalls.
Inspired by his experience, Linus began exploring thesis topics that aligned with Kollmorgen AMS's work. Together with one of the system architects, he defined a project focused on high-performance computing - an area where he could push boundaries and deliver real value.
Throughout the thesis, Linus received mentorship and technical guidance from his team. The result? A research project that not only deepened his expertise but also contributed directly to Kollmorgen AMS's development efforts.
Becoming Full-Time Employee
After completing his thesis, Linus was offered to join Kollmorgen AMS as a full-time Software Engineer. "While the technical challenge was exciting, the real reason I said yes was the people. The supportive and collaborative culture made it an easy decision." he says.
Linus's Tips for Future Innovators
His message to students is clear: "Dare to apply for roles even if you lack direct experience - curiosity and ambition can take you far. I had no prior experience with AGVs or related field, yet I thrived because I was eager to learn."
He adds, "At Kollmorgen AMS, your ideas matter. If you see an opportunity to improve a product, you'll be encouraged to explore it."
