At the heart of the action
To set things in motion, collaboration is crucial. This applies to every team here at Kollmorgen, of course, but it's especially relevant for a group operating at the heart of the delivery chain. Allow us to introduce you to our Tools Team Purple and one of its members, our System Architect Daniel.
"My role serves as a bridge between the Product Managers who request features and the development teams responsible for programming them. While Product Managers concentrate on determining what needs to be done, my role is to focus on how to do it. In simple terms, I’m here to provide guidance to the development team when needed, ensuring a smooth workflow and effective execution," Daniel explains.
Even though Daniel is the sole System Architect in Tools Team Purple, he collaborates daily with other Architects and their respective teams within the company. The same goes for his eight teammates, each contributing unique expertise in software engineering, SQA testing, and technical writing.
"As we operate in the heart of the chain, building strong collaborations with other teams and gaining a comprehensive understanding of their systems and technological components are crucial to our success. This dynamic also empowers us to gain knowledge across a wide spectrum of subjects, making our work not only essential but also highly engaging," Daniel continues.
In Daniel's team, the primary focus revolves around two different applications designed to deliver excellent vehicle control for Kollmorgen's partners and customers: Layout Designer for creating track designs and desired Automated Guided Vehicle features, and CWay for visualizing vehicle automation.
"Our work presents a unique challenge as we deal with a significant amount of legacy software that has been used for an extended period. Given our systems' longevity, a wealth of embedded knowledge must be translated into newer versions, primarily to enhance development speed and facilitate the integration of new team members, but also for security purposes. This endeavour, although challenging, is equally rewarding and stimulating," Daniel concludes.
As Daniel and the Tools Team Purple continue navigating the ever-evolving landscape of software engineering and automation, they are excited about what the future will hold.
"In the team, we work daily with innovation and research, whether learning new ways to develop something or how to apply Machine Learning in the product. It will be very exciting to see the next steps we'll take and the future skills we'll need within the team regarding AI and Data Science."
